Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Bird Watching at UWEC and Entebbe Botanical Gardens
Begin your adventure with an early morning departure from Kampala, heading towards Entebbe. Your first stop will be the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, a sanctuary that offers a glimpse into Uganda’s bird diversity, including some of the country’s rescued and rehabilitated species. Here, expect to see a variety of water birds, raptors, and possibly some of the endangered species like the Grey Parrot.
After enjoying several hours at UWEC, continue to the nearby Entebbe Botanical Gardens. These historic gardens, established in 1898, are a haven for numerous bird species and offer a serene environment for bird watching. Walk along the well-maintained paths and explore different sections of the gardens, each hosting unique species. Look out for the Orange Weaver, Red-chested Sunbird, and the spectacular African Fish Eagle. The botanical gardens provide not just excellent birding opportunities but also a chance to relax and enjoy the lush, tropical flora.
Lunch will be had at a local restaurant in Entebbe, where you can enjoy some of Uganda’s delicious cuisine while discussing the morning’s sightings. In the afternoon, you will have another opportunity to stroll through the gardens, focusing on areas previously unexplored, before heading back to your accommodation in Entebbe for an overnight stay.
Day 2: Bird Watching at Mabamba Swamps
On the second day, rise early and depart for the Mabamba Swamps, one of the best places in the world to spot the elusive Shoebill Stork. Located on the edge of Lake Victoria, Mabamba is an extensive marshland that provides the perfect habitat for this rare species. Upon arrival, embark on a canoe ride through the swamp, guided by skilled local boatmen who know the best spots to find the Shoebill. This is a unique experience, silently gliding through the waterways, surrounded by papyrus and reed beds.
The Mabamba Swamps are not only about the Shoebill; they are also home to many other species such as the African Jacana, Malachite Kingfisher, and various species of herons and egrets. Keep your binoculars ready and your camera at hand, as the bird life here is vibrant and abundant. After several hours of exploration and hopefully successful Shoebill sightings, return to the mainland.
Enjoy a packed lunch while you share experiences and sightings with fellow bird watchers.
